Viineeth Kumar Singh on jugaad

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Viineet Kumar Siingh shares his jugaad during his college days. He said, “Meri sister ne dekha TV pe ek talent hunt aa raha tha, ‘Superstars’, toh usme actors khoje jaa rahe hai. Main medical college se seedha aaya Mumbai audition dene ke liye. Yaha pohocha toh mujhe laga ke, joh batayenge woh kar dunga. Mere zindai ka pehela audition Mumbai me tha. Waha gaya toh maine pucha, ‘Kya karu?’ Woh line lagi hui thi. Pehela Anubhav tha audition ka toh woh kuch de nahi rahe the woh yeh bole ki, ‘Apne kuch karo.’ (My sister saw a talent hunt show, Superstars, where they were looking for actors. I came straight from medical college to Mumbai for the audition. I thought they would give me something to perform, as it was my first-ever audition in Mumbai. When I got there, I asked, ‘What should I do?’ There was a long queue. And since it was my first audition experience, they didn’t give me anything and just said, ‘Do something on your own.’)”

He continued “Toh mai Haridwar Medical College me isliye gaya tha ki mai har Friday ko gayab ho jata tha aur, Delhi chala jata tha. NSD me joh bhi activity hoti thi 1-2 karke, bus pakad ke 5 ghante ke raste se wapas. Toh maine Ghasiram Kotwal dekha tha, toh woh reh gaya dimag me toh uski ek kahani bana ke 2 page likhke, jaake woh kiya. Toh yeh joh jugaad hai mai isko bolta hu improvise karna, ki joh situation aa gayi usme improvise karo. Joh aapko bataya gaya woh toh theek hai, norm hai sabke liye, lekin aap jaha phas rahe ho waha improvise karo. (I went to Haridwar Medical College, but every Friday, I would disappear and go to Delhi. And I would attend any activity happening at NSD, then take a bus back on the five-hour journey. I had watched Ghashiram Kotwal, and it stuck in my mind, so I wrote a two-page story around it and performed that. This kind of hacki s what I call improvisation—adapting to the situation. What you’re told to do is fine; it’s the norm for everyone. But when you get stuck, you have to improvise.)”

Vineet on his post-graduation

“Jab PG kar raha tha Nagpur College me toh meri shirt bhi joh hai woh, har lecture theatre ke diwaro ke raang jaake pehele dekhkar aur usse milti-julti shirt kharid ke lata tha aur aise jagah par baith jata tha ki mere hone ya na hone se padhane wale kisi bhi professor ko koi dikkat nahi honi chahiye. Kabhi maine haath nahi uthaya jawab dene ke liye. Maine uss darmiyaan 6 filme ki as an assisant director lekin uski wajah se duniya me kya ho raha tha mujhe pata nahi tha. Yaha scheduel khatam hota tha aur mai train pakad ke Vidarbha Express, fir joh padhai chuti hoti thi usko cover karke fir pata reheta tha ki agle 15 din ka scheduel lagne wala hai toh thoda aur padh le.”

(During my post-graduation at Nagpur College, I would first check the color of the lecture theatre walls and buy a matching shirt so that my presence wouldn’t bother any professor. I never raised my hand to answer questions. During that time, I worked as an assistant director on six films, but I had no idea what was happening in the world. As soon as a film schedule ended, I would catch the Vidarbha Express, cover any missed studies, and prepare for the next 15-day shoot while studying in between.)

“Toh 6 saal me na koi girlfriend bani na jeevan me aur kya hua pata nahi sirf yahi kaam kiya. Final year MD me mai pakda gaya… toh kuch friends the madat karte the, baaki kisi ko kuch pata nahi tha. Luckily logo ne ek film dekh li aur unko laga yeh toh yahi hai aur woh somehow travel kar gaya. Dean sir ne bola ‘Main yaha 10 saal hu, tu degree leeke nahi jaa payega.’ Phir mai ek saal Bombay chod ke wahi raha, phir mai Dean sir ko ya toh Medical College ke ward ke bed pe nazar aata tha, OPD me nazar aata tha, ya OT me nazar aata tha. Reheta Medical College me hi tha. 365 din mein na main Mumbai aya na ghar gaya. Wapis jab admit card lene ki baat aayi toh Dean sir ne khud aapne haatho se diya aur bole, ‘Bhai tu kis mitti ka bana hai malum nahi tu ja, tujhe last year hi chod dena tha.’ Toh jugaad se cheeze ho jaati hai aur Mukkabaz bhi jugaad se hi ki thi.”

(“For six years, I had no personal life—just work. In my final MD year, I got caught, but friends helped. A film I worked on gained recognition, and word spread. The Dean warned I wouldn’t get my degree, so I stayed at the medical college for a year, never leaving. After 365 days, he handed me my admit card, saying, ‘I don’t know what you’re made of, but you should’ve left last year.’ That’s how jugaad works—just like Mukkabaaz.”)
